We’ve all heard about the perils of pollution in the news – people not being able to breathe polluted air easily, maintain healthy guts drinking unclean water, get enough nutrition from chemical-laden foods, and/or sustain wellness because of high radiation levels all over the world. It seems like there is no hope for you and your family and friends to live a healthy life in the face of increasing levels of environmental toxins. In fact, in my eBook, ReAline: Building Blocks to Detox, I mention that:

“[t]o study the extent of ongoing environment pollution, The Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org) commissioned five laboratories in the U.S., Canada, and Europe to analyze umbilical cord blood. The blood was collected from 10 infants born in 2007 and 2008. Collectively, the laboratories identified 232 different industrial compounds and pollutants in this group of babies, finding complex mixtures of compounds in each infant.”

No wonder parents worry about a future with less and less wellness.

The good news is that a scenario of doom and gloom for all is far from the truth. Your body is an intelligent wellness machine, and as I said in my webinar, Daily Detox, your body also “is a detoxification machine itself.” If you support your body’s detoxification process, you can achieve and maintain good health, no matter what is going on in the environment around you.

What Is Detoxification?

Detox is a normal body function that leads to increased wellness. (I give a brief description of detoxification as one of the three wellness processes in my blog, What Happens when I Start to Get Well.) The body is a genius at self-healing and self-cleaning until we mess it up. We can assist what the body already knows how to do way better than we know. I repeat for emphasis; we can only assist. We can’t decide ourselves that this is what the body wants to do, so we are going to make it happen. That often ends in tears.

How Can I Assist the Body?

  • Reduce Toxic Input – Small doses of toxins can be beneficial because of hormesis – where a mild stress makes your cells work more efficiently.
  • Increase Healthy Input – Yeast-Free diet and protocol with good probiotics (We are suggesting you use Restore4Life before my Flora Revive comes out this year.) and fresh organic food. (See ReSet the Yeast Connection.)
  • Enhance Normal Output – Support body’s detox organs and pathway.

Organs of Detoxification

  • Skin – the largest organ of detoxification
  • Liver – does most of the chemical detoxification. Any time a drug or food go through the body and the liver as molecules, the liver has pathways that breakdown those chemicals and allow them to be excreted more safely.
  • Kidneys – excretion
  • Colon – excretion
  • Lymph – glands that swell up when you have an infection. They are important to keep clean and clear with appropriate hydration, exercise, massage, and baths.

How Can I Assist My Body with Detoxification?

  • Assist your skin’s ability to eliminate toxins by taking Epsom salt/bentonite clay baths. (Instructions below)
  • You can rest your organs through fasting or intermittent fasting. I talk about different types of fasting a great deal in my eBook, ReSet Your Ideal Weight.
  • If you feel that fasting or intermittent fasting is beyond your abilities now, you can always replace on or two meals per day with ReStructure in order to give your over-worked digestion a rest.
  • Feed the body healthy nutrients. Here are the supplements I take daily to increase my wellness.
  • Promote elimination through hydration, a good probiotic, and the use of a good detox drink (suggestions below). Do not use harsh herbs, laxatives, or diuretics.
  • Since I am cautioning you to be careful about stimulating your liver, since your liver can store viruses that your body hasn’t chosen to deal with yet. I have written this more detailed section about supporting liver detoxification.

Phase I and II of Liver Detoxification Require
Magnesium, Minerals, Vitamins, and Amino Acids

In my post, Safe Detoxing for Everyone, I talk about the importance of ReMag/magnesium to support liver detoxification:

“In Phase I Detoxification the liver biologically transforms chemicals to make them water soluble using a long list of enzymes. What have I harped on about for close to two decades? Magnesium is necessary for the proper functioning of over 1,000 enzyme systems in the body. So, it’s obvious that [all stages of] Phase I Detoxification (quoting from the above article) are going to require magnesium.”

I go on to say that both ReMag/Magnesium, ReMyte/Minerals, the vitamins and sulphurated amino acids found in ReAline, and amino acid in ReStructure are necessary for Phase II Detoxification:

“The results of Phase I Detoxification can produce chemical that are even more toxic, but these are rapidly cleared by Phase II Detoxification if the following reactions occur with the following assistance of minerals and vitamins.

• Acetylation: Acetyl Co-A (coenzyme A and acetic acid) is added to form a mercapturic acid conjugate; Needs B5 to function.

• Amino acid conjugation (acylation): Peptide (compound formed by two amino acids linked by a special bond) conjugation using acyl Co-A (coenzyme A and carboxylic acid) and the amino acids taurine, glucine, glutamine, and to a lesser extent, arginine and ornithine.

• Glucuronidation (gluconation): Addition of a sugar group, using glucuronic acid; the major conjugation reaction for xenobiotics and internally produced chemicals converting them to water-soluble metabolites.

• Glutathione conjugation: Reduced glutathione combines with xenobiotics to form fewer toxic compounds. Plays a major role in conjugating reactive metabolites formed during cytochrome P-450 biotransformation. Predominant defense against free radicals. Results in formation of mercapturic acid.

• Methylation: Addition of a methyl (CH3) group, using the amino acid methionine to supply the methyl group. Detoxifies many synthetics and endogenous toxic compounds; the neurotransmitters epinephrine, norepinephrine, and serotonin; and nutrients. This reaction is B6 dependent.

• Sulfur conjugation (sulfation): Includes several processes including sulfonation, which adds inorganic sulfate to hydroxyl groups for detoxification, and reduction of cyanides by adding sulfur.

The article states that ‘…the efficiency of Phase I and Phase II is adversely affected by deficiencies of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fatty acids. Inadequate protein intake specifically reduces Phase I clearance, and insufficient calories decreases overall detoxification function.'”

In the next section of this post, I am going to discuss the tools I suggest you use to support your body’s detoxification processes. Many readers have questions about how best to use these tools, so I thought I would put the information all in one post.

Hydration Support

Drink half your body weight in pounds in ounces of water with 1/4 teaspoon of unprocessed salt (sea, Celtic, Hawaiian, Himalayan) in every 32 ounces (liter) of water you drink. If you have concerns about my unprocessed salt recommendations, please read my post, Sea Salt Superfood. Appropriate hydration will support all detoxification processes as well as help your body properly absorb and utilize your nutrients.

Epsom Salts/Bentonite Clay Bath

For those new to the magic of Magnesium, Epsom Salts are MgSO4 and actually date back to Roman times. It would appear that our ancestors from 300+ years ago were afflicted by many of the same conditions that plague our society today. One major difference: they chose to use a vital, natural & restorative mineral (Maggie) to bring their bodies back into metabolic balance. So how “advanced” are we really?”

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, and that’s important because bathing in it gives you a healthy supply of sulfur along with the magnesium. Sulfur is another important mineral that we may be lacking. To investigate this mineral, you can view a PowerPoint by Dr. Stephanie Sennoff on taurine, an important sulfur-based amino acid.

According to Dr. Norm Shealy, bathing in magnesium salts is also an important way to stimulate the DHEA receptors lying under your skin.

Here are recipes for two detox support baths I highly recommend:

Recipe 1

Ingredients:

1-2 cups Epsom Salts

1/2 cup Pure Facial Grade Sodium Bentonite Clay (Ask for the COA for any product you are thinking of using. This insures purity.)

Instructions:

Mix the above in some warm water in a blender and add to a “warm enough to make you sweat” bath. Soak for 30-45 minutes and shower off. If you can’t do a sit bath, you can do a foot bath by halving the amounts listed above.

Recipe 2

Ingredients:

1 cup Epsom Salts

1 cup Baking Soda

1 cup Apple Cider Vinegar

Instructions:

Mix the above in some warm water in a blender and add to a “warm enough to make you sweat” bath. Soak for 30-45 minutes and shower off. If you can’t do a sit bath, you can do a foot bath by halving the amounts listed above.

Skin Breakouts (Pimples, Rashes, Cysts, Etc.)

Since your skin is the largest organ of detoxification, as you improve your hydration, nutrition, exercise, breathing, and outdoor activity, you may find that your skin breakouts. If this occurs, application of a clay poultice will help your skin eliminate toxins and rebalance. Here is an example of how my husband used one of my clay poultices, taken from one of my posts about clay and magnesium baths:

“Recently I experienced another clay poulticing miracle. My husband showed me a 3mm hard, rough skin-colored bump on the back of his calf. Scraping it with a fingernail elicited a sharp nerve pain. I suspected he had an insect stinger or a tiny thorn embedded in this bump so I put it to the clay poultice test.

I took a teaspoon of bentonite clay, mixed it with water to make a clay pudding. Twice a day for about a week I put a small amount of wet clay on a non-stick pad (cut to size) and taped it down with micropore tape (which doesn’t strip out hairs).

Over the first few days, the bump softened and flattened but the pain remained. Then on the 7th day we noticed a tiny red hole in the skin. The pain was gone and so was the stinger or thorn!! The poultice had opened the skin to allow the foreign body to escape!”

Clay Poultice Recipe

Ingredients and Tools:

Clean Washcloth

Clean Plastic Wrap or Bag

Clean (but can be older) Towel (bath or smaller, depending on where the breakout is located)

2 tsps. to 1/4 cup Pure Facial Grade Sodium Bentonite Clay (Ask for the COA for any product you are thinking of using. This insures purity.)

Pure Water, ReMag, Pico Silver – enough to wet the clay and make a paste when you stir the mixture

Instructions:

Make the paste. It should be the consistency of a pudding. Fold washcloth until it fits over the breakout with some room to spare. Spoon paste on washcloth. Put the washcloth paste side down over the breakout. Cover the cloth with enough plastic so the paste doesn’t leak out. Cover the area with the towel so that the area gets warmer. Some people will even put a heating pad on the poultice for a few minutes to get it warm. Leave the poultice on overnight. Wash off in the morning.

NOTE: For small areas, follow what I did with my husband.

Support Your Elimination

As I said earlier, you don’t want to force your body’s natural elimination process by using laxatives, harsh herbs, diuretics, etc. If you add fiber to your diet, appropriately hydrate and exercise, and supplement any magnesium deficiency you have with ReMag, then you have done everything you can to support your body’s elimination of toxins and other waste materials.

Here is the recipe for the detox drink I suggest using when your body seems overwhelmed, i.e., is dumping toxins faster than they are being eliminated. The signs for this could include a dull headache, a skin breakout, swollen glands, or mild flu symptoms.

Recipe for Detox Drink

Measure each product into an empty shaker cup and add 4 oz. of water:

Food Grade Liquid Bentonite clay -1-3 tsp.

Psyllium seed powder -1-3 tsp. (substitute 2-6 tsp. Aloe gel if ―allergic to psyllium)

Dosage: Take one dose first thing in the morning and one dose last thing at night, on an empty stomach.

Note: I like the Great Plains/Yerba Prima brand, available at vitacost.com, of Food Grade Liquid Bentonite Clay and Psyllium Husk Powder.

Castor Oil Packs

When your lymph nodes swell, most of the time your body is doing its best to clear toxins. Using a Castor Oil Pack with appropriate hydration and an increase in just moving your body can help your lymph system detoxify.

Recipe Castor Oil Packs

Ingredients:

4-6 tbsp pure facial grade Sodium bentonite clay

4-6 tbsp Organic Castor Oil

Using a fork, mix clay and castor oil together in a bowl to create a cookie dough consistency. Put the mixture on a small washcloth and place over areas with lots of lymph nodes: breasts, liver, armpits, groin and according to the condition you want to treat.

Use first aid tape to attach the washcloth to your body to keep it in place. Tape a plastic bag on top to keep the castor oil from oozing out onto your clothes.

NOTE: You can use on pack during the day. Wash off and then use another pack at night when you go to bed.

A Coffee Enema: You Have to Be Kidding, Right?

No, I’m not kidding when I talk about the value of a coffee enema, in particular, when your body needs detoxification support. Here are my reasons, taken from my book, ReSet Your Ideal Weight:

“I have talked about coffee enemas, but I’ve never written down a proper procedure. I’ll embellish some excellent material from Dr. Sherry Rogers 1994 book Wellness Against All Odds, which I found on a website selling “the best coffee for coffee enemas:”

The very last part of the colon, before reaching the rectum, is in an “S” shape and called the sigmoid colon. By the time stool gets to this part of the colon, most nutrients have been absorbed back into the bloodstream. Because the stool contains products of putrefaction at this point, there exists a special circulatory system between the sigmoid colon and the liver. There is a direct communication of veins called the enterohepatic circulation. Have you ever felt sick just before having a bowel movement, when stool material has just moved into the rectum for elimination? As soon as the material is evacuated, you no longer feel sick. This is due of the toxic quality of the material and the enterohepatic circulation coming into play. Because of this, it is important to evacuate when you have the urge. The rectum should usually be empty.

This circulatory system enables toxin to be sent directly to the liver for detoxification, rather than circulating them through the rest of the body and all its vital organs including the brain. This system of veins carries rectal/sigmoid toxins directly to the liver for detoxification. When a coffee enema is used, the caffeine from the coffee is preferentially absorbed into this system and goes directly to the liver where it becomes a very strong detoxicant. It causes the liver to produce more bile (which contains processed toxins) and moves bile out toward the small intestine for elimination. This seems to free up the liver to process more incoming toxic materials that have accumulated in the organs, tissues and bloodstream. The coffee does not go into the systemic circulation, unless the enema procedure is done improperly. The coffee contains some alkaloids that also stimulate the production of glutathione-S-transferase, an enzyme used by the liver to make the detox pathways run. It is pivotal in the formation of more glutathione, one of the main conjugation chemicals, enabling toxins to be eliminated via bile into the small intestine. In other words, a coffee enema speeds up the detoxification process and minimizes the backlog of yet to be detoxified substances.”

The Total Body ReSet Was Designed to Support Detoxification

This is a lot of information to process, but I want to impress upon you how our genius body is taking care of us and doesn’t need to depend on chelation therapy or heavy detoxification methods that theoretically are supposed to just remove the bad guys. Now that you know more than most doctors about detoxification, what can you do to safely enhance your own biochemistry?

Of course, my answer is The Total Body ReSet formulas – with the cornerstone being ReAline–let me repeat why.

  • ReAline has the taurine necessary for amino acid conjugation. The sulfur molecules in taurine and methionine provide sulfur. The 4 methylated B vitamins provide the methyl groups necessary for methylation. Methionine is the precursor to glutathione.
  • ReMag assists Phase I and Phase II Detoxification in almost every step.
  • ReAline works synergistically with ReMag (magnesium) and ReMyte (multiple minerals). These minerals are picometer in size and they are 100% absorbed at the cellular level. When they inhabit the cell, they will kick out heavy metals and chemicals that don’t belong there. ReAline helps detox the heavy metals and chemicals that are being dumped from cells, eliminating the detox reactions that could be taking place.
  • ReMyte minerals: molybdenum, manganese, selenium, and copper (and probably several others) assist Phase I.
  • RnA Drops to help make perfect cells and get that labyrinth of your mind out of the picture so you stop worrying that the sky is falling.
  • ReStructure as a meal replacement helps to give your digestion a rest while providing necessary nutrients.
  • The vitamins and probiotics mentioned in my supplement recommendations compliment the Completement formulas and provide the remaining basic nutrients that your body requires to create more wellness (link above).

Taking this small handful of nutrients daily will naturally assist your body’s own detoxification processes. This is a much more viable option than forcing detoxification with IV chelating chemicals or IV glutathione or oral EDTA with dozens of synthetic vitamins and poorly absorbed minerals.
